Heather Esker has been selected as Ave Maria’s Co-Female Athlete of the Week ending March 10th, 2013. Esker, a junior out of Effingham, Ill. led the Lady Gyrenes on the court this week with wins over Walsh and conference-foe Southeastern. First versus Southeastern-Esker defeated Sadietou Mayou in the No. 1 singles spot 7-6(5), 2-6, 10-5 and in the No. 1 doubles spot with teammate Mary Kate Lee, 8-5 over Southeastern’s Mayou/Quinn. Against Walsh she came away with the win over Shellie Webster in the No. 1 singles spot 6-2, 7-6(8) and picked up another win, 8-2, in the No. 1 doubles spot with teammate Mary Kate Lee over Walsh’s Webster/ Shaheen. In another non-conference matchup this week she picked up AMU’s only win in the match by defeating Rockhurst’s Alex Schelble in the No. 1 singles spot 6-1, 6-1.
The Lady Gyrenes finished the week 2-1. They return to the court on Wednesday at a neutral site in Tampa, Fla. against Curry College. The match is slated to begin at 4:30p.m.
