Gyrenes Victorious On Senior Day

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria football team concluded its 2014 season with a 35-8 victory over the visiting Builders of Apprentice School. With the win, the Gyrenes finish the season with a 5-6 overall record. Prior to the game, AMU honored the 23 seniors on the Ave Maria football team.
 
It didn't take the Gyrenes long to put points on the board, scoring on their opening drive when Clayton Uecker found Senior Travis Makauskas for a 13-yard pass and catch at the 11:17 mark in the first quarter. Late in the opening quarter, Johntavis Brown found pay dirt on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Uecker to put the Blue and Green up 14-0.
 
Kaleb Coffee was the next to get in on the action for AMU, when he scored on a seven-yard touchdown run with 8:55 remaining in the half. Just before the half, Apprentice School scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Deon Lavender to Trevon Johnson to make the score 20-6 at the break.
 
Brandon Leon connected on a pair of field goals, from 37- and 33-yards, to push the AMU lead to 26-6 before a safety by Apprentice School made the score 26-8.
 
Early in the fourth quarter, Makauskas touched the pylon on diving effort for his second touchdown reception of the afternoon from Uecker with 10:50 remaining. Late in the game, Leon connected on a 48-yard field goal to make the final 35-8.
 
Uecker finished 34-of-51 passing for 392 yards and three touchdowns. Makauskas caught a pair of Uecker touchdown passes and a team-high seven reception for 49 yards. Senior Chris Fahey had four receptions for 57 yards.
 
Leon finished 3-for-4 on field goals, converting from 33, 37 and 48 yards.
 
The Gyrene defense held Apprentice School to six points, with the other two coming on the safety, and to 230 yards of total offense. Apprentice School rushed for 14 yards on the game.
 
Five Gyrene seniors anchored the AMU defense. Nick Dorgan totaled eight tackles, five for a loss and three 2.5 sacks. Tanner Bowling tallied seven total tackles with four tackles for a loss and 1 sack. Brandon Ross had six solo tackles with three tackles for a loss and a sack. Mike Baumgardner had seven solo tackles and a tackle assist. Conor Myers had five total tackles and broke up two passes.
