AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria University women's basketball team won big in their home opener as they defeated the Cougars of Clearwater Christian College 94-41.
Everything was going the Gyrenes way in the first half as they shot 45%. The Cougars shot only 23% and were held to only 20 points in the first half.
The second half began strong for the Lady Gyrenes when they were able to build on their first half lead. They shot early 50% from the field, and their stifling defense put a stop to the Cougars as they scored 21 points in the second half.
The Gyrenes scored 28 points in the paint, and were able to capitalize off of Clearwater Christians turnovers which led to the Blue and Green scoring 22 points. AMU also had 19 second chance points due to their 19 offense rebounds.
Yvanessa Vincent had a standout offensive game with 12 points and 12 rebounds (seven offensive rebounds).
Madison McDonald continues to play well for the Gyrenes as she scored 17 points and had 5 assists.
Ashlee Rioux chipped in 12 points.

The Lady Gyrenes return to the court Tuesday when they play Florida College at home. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
