Volleyball Travels To Florida College For Midweek Matchup

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Lady Gyrene volleyball team will travel to Temple Terrace, Fla. on Tuesday night to take on Florida College in a non-conference tilt. AMU will look to improve on its 1-3 overall record while Florida College (1-0) looks to stay unbeaten. The opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
 
Scouting Ave Maria
Ave Maria opened the season by going 1-3 at the Northwood Labor Day Volleyfest. The Gyrenes lost to McPherson, Concordia (Ala.), and Northwood while sweeping Edward Waters College for their first win of the season. Two of the Lady Gyrenes loses came in five sets. Through four matches, Hannah Wurster (Conestoga, Pa.) leads AMU in kills with 52 followed by Lexie Andric (Tallahassee, Fla.) with 31 and Lexy Smith (Manassas, Va.) with 27. Jessica Schein (Greenfield, Wisc.) has tallied 105 assists on the season and Mary Eckard (Milford, Iowa) is the team's dig leader with 71.  Meredith Morgan (Naples, Fla.) has been a force at the net with four solo and six assist blocks in 16 sets. She also leads the team with eight service aces.
 
Scouting Florida College
Florida College has played one match on the season, a 3-0 home win against South Florida State College. Camille Crim led the Lady Falcons with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Malea Kalina and Savannah Gorman each tallied seven kills in the sweep. Crim also led Florida College with 3.5 blocks on the evening. Rachel Tharp was the dig leader for the Falcons with 16. Florida College will sport a veteran lineup with seven upperclassmen on the team.
 
The Series
The Blue and Green haven't faired well in the all-time series with the Lady Falcons. AMU is 0-5 all-time against Florida College including a 3-0 loss last season at the Clearwater Christian Tournament. AMU is 0-1 at home and on the road against Florida College and is 0-3 against the Lady Falcons at neutral sites.
 
Hannah Wurster Ties AMU Match Kills Mark
Sophomore Hannah Wurster tied the individual match record for kills in a match with 22 against Concorida (Ala.) on Saturday. The middle hitter set the 5-set record which had previously been 19 set by Savannah Stona on Nov. 4, 2011.
 
Eckard Sets 3-Set Digs Record
With 25 digs against Edward Waters College, defensive specialist Mary Eckard broke Hayley Wonka and Marian DeTar's three set dig record of 21. Wonka set the record on Nov. 2, 2010 against Florida College. DeTar tied the record last season on Oct. 25 against Warner.
 
Exhibition Matches On Thursday
Ave Maria will travel to Broward College on Thursday to take on Palm Beach State College and Broward in a pair of exhibition matches. The matches are set to start at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
