TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. --- The Ave Maria University volleyball team fell to Florida College on Thursday night in Temple Terrace. Tied at one set a piece, AMU lost the fourth set 28-26 before dropping the fifth set 25-17. The Blue and Green return to the court on Thursday for a pair of exhibition matches at Broward College.
Hannah Wurster (Conestoga, Pa.) led the Gyrenes with 10 kills on the night while
Veronika Garcia (Tampa, Fla.) tallied 20 assists.
Jessica Schein (Greenfield, Wisc.) and
Keke Smith (Kissimmee, Fla.) led AMU in digs with 17 and 12, respectively.
Tied at 10 in the opening set, AMU won six of the next nine points to take a 16-13 lead but weren't able to hold on to that lead as Florida College came back to take the set 25-21.
In the second set, the Lady Gyrenes rallied from a 17-15 deficit to take the second set 25-20 and even the match at a set a piece.
After falling behind 5-0 in the third set, AMU rallied to tie the match at 16 and eventually had a set point at 26-25 before Florida College took the final three points to take the set 28-26. The Lady Gyrenes again rallied from an early deficit in the fourth set to tie the match at 15-all but Florida College won 10 of the final 12 points to close out the match.
