Warner Spoils Gyrenes Home Opener, 17-7

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- Playing their first home game of the 2014 season, the Gyrenes fell to Warner 17-7 on a rain-soaked AMU Football Field. The Gyrenes fall to 0-4 on the season and to 0-1 in Sun Conference action.

Kaleb Coffee led the ground attack for AMU with 31 carries for 109 yards. Clayton Uecker finished 13-of-24 for 139 with one touchdown and one interception. Travis Makauskas led the Gyrenes in reception with four for 43 yards and a touchdown.

Kurt Joseph and Tanner Bowling tied for the team-high in tackles with nine apiece. Bowling also had two tackles for a loss. Tom Anderson finished with eight tackles.

Warner struck first with a one yard touchdown run by Leslie Young 3:37 into the opening quarter. A few minutes later, Clayton Uecker hit Travis Makauskas on a quick pass and Makauskas with plenty of room took it the final 16 yards for a touchdown to cap a 16-play, 65-yard drive.

Early in the second quarter, Warner kicker Brian Abrams connected on a 45-yard field goal to put the Royals up 10-7. That score would hold until halftime.

After a high-snap on a punt attempt by Warner gave the Gyrenes the ball at the Royal's 10-yard line, the Blue and Green looked poised to tie the game with a 20 yard field-goal attempt. However, the kick was blocked and recovered by Dekivious Crawford and returned 85 yards for a touchdown.

The Gyrenes had a couple opportunities to pull closer but turnovers and costly penalties halted the Blue and Green's momentum.

AMU returns to the field next weekend when they host Concordia (Ala.) at 1 p.m.
