AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team dropped a hard-fought three setter to Warner on Tuesday night. Each set came down to the wire with Warner able to capitalize on a few more point down the stretch than the Lady Gyrenes.
Hannah Wurster and Lexy Smith each tallied nine kills to lead the Lady Gyrenes. Ashley St. Hubin added four kills while recording one solo and four assist blocks.
The Blue and Green held the lead for most of the first set until Warner battled back to tie the game at 18-18. Trailing Warner, 22-20, AMU scored the next three points to tie the set at 22-22 but back-to-back errors gave the Lady Royals a couple set points which they capitalized on to take the first set 25-23.
The second set saw the Lady Gyrenes playing from a couple points behind for the early part of the game. The Blue and Green would come back to tie the match at 15-15 on a kill by Wurster. Warner scored five of the next six points to break away from AMU and went on to take the set 25-20.
The third set started out much like the second, with AMU falling behind early and then coming back to tie and eventually take the lead in the set at 18-17. With the set tied at 23-all, Warner took advantage of an AMU error that gave them a match point and won the set 25-23.
AMU returns to the court on Wednesday night when they make the trip across the alley to West Palm Beach, Fla. to take on Northwood at 7 p.m.
