RecapAve Maria, Fla.-- The Ave Maria University baseball team dropped both ends of their double header with Edward Waters on opening day at Bowie's Ballpark. Game one the Gyrenes fell to the visiting Tigers by a score of 6-1 followed by a 12-10 defeat in game two.
Game 1Austin Munn (Lafayette, Ind.) took the mound in the opener for the blue and green lasting 4.1 innings while striking out 8 and allowing just 1 earned run. Munn was followed by reliever Just Bureau (Orange, Ca.) who went 2.2 innings, striking out 3 and allowing 1 earned run. Tommy Lentine (Chicago, Ill.) provided the lone Gyrene run with a solo home run in the first inning.
Doubles by Juan Bracamonte (Tampa, Fla.) and Dustyn Rivero (Oviedo, Fla.) backed Tigers pitcher Bilal Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) who recorded the team's first win of the season.
Ave Maria jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first but a 4 run third coupled with 1 run in the fifth and sixth innings from Edward Waters set the Gyrenes back for a 6-1 loss.
Game 2Edward Waters jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two with RBI's from Miguel Beltre (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Dustyn Rivero (Oviedo, Fla.). After adding another run in the third, the Tigers exploded for another 5 runs in the fifth inning highlighted by a grand slam home run by Jesse Baker (Seabring, Fla).
Tucker Starkey (Mayville, Ky.) opened the scoring with an RBI double for Ave Maria in the fifth inning bringing freshman Matt Wiles (Melbourne, Fla.) around to score.
EWC tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a two RBI double by Miguel Beltre (Kissimmee, Fla.) but Ave Maria would answer right back in the same inning with a two run home run to center field by senior Nick Sacchetta (Naples, Fla).
The Tigers went on to plate two more runs in the top of the seventh with RBI doubles from Alberto Rivera (Orlando, Fla.) and Jose Visaez (Jacksonville, Fla.).
Just as the game seemed out of reach Ave Maria fought back in the final frame scoring seven runs as sophomore Jake Berry (Montverde, Fla.) crushed a three run home run to left field and senior Tucker Starkey (Mayville, Ky.) and freshman Danny Lastra (Tampa, Fla.) added two RBI a piece.
The late rally would fall just short for the Gyrenes as the game would end with a final score of 12-10 in favor of Edward Waters.
