Lady Gyrenes Set Program Win Mark

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team picked up their 13th win of the season on Thursday night, a straight set victory at Trinity College of Florida, to set a new program record for most wins in a season. The previous record was 12 wins in a season set back in 2012.
 
Trailing 18-13 in the opening set, the Blue and Green were able to overcome the slow start and rallied to even the match at 20-all. Trailing 22-21, AMU won three straight points to earn a set point, 24-22. After Trinity College won back-to-back points to even the set for a 14th time, the Blue and Green were able to take the final two points on kills by Lexy Smith and Marie Mendez.
 
The Lady Gyrenes went on a quick five-point spurt in the second set to jump out to an early 12-6 lead on the Lady Tigers. The Blue and Green were able to maintain a 6-7 point lead for the remainder of the set, eventually taking the game 25-16.
 
After Trinity College opened the third set on a 5-2 run, the Blue and Green won six straight points on Lauren Ruby's serve to take an 8-5 advantage. The teams went back-and-forth over the next several points but AMU was able to maintain a slim lead, 22-21. AMU won the final three points of the game to take the third set, 25-21, and the match.
 
Lexy Smith tallied a game-high 18 kills in the match while hitting at a .516 clip. She also had five total blocks. Hannah Wurster added nine kills for the Lady Gyrenes.
 
Veronika Garcia recorded a double-double with 20 assist and 15 digs. Monique Rivers and Rachel Schultz also finished in double figures in digs with 18 and 12, respectively. Lauren Ruby had 16 assists.
 
The Lady Gyrenes return to the court tomorrow night when they take on Southeastern in Lakeland. The conference matchup is set to begin at 7 p.m.
