AVE MARIA, Fla. --- Trailing by five at the half, the Ave Maria men's basketball team couldn't get things going in the second half against visiting Edward Waters, eventually falling 70-51.
Martez Harris led the Gyrenes with 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting. Exor Torres added nine points and had two assists for the Blue and Green. Julian Adams grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Nate Krimsky and Brandon Dean each tallied five boards.
The Gyrenes shot 38 percent from the floor in the opening half but were just 6-of-24 in the second half to finish the game at a 32 percent clip. The Blue and Green weren't able to get into a rhythm from three either, making 5-of-25 from behind the arc.
Edward Waters shot 44.3 percent on the night and made six from behind the arc. The Tigers outrebounded AMU 37-31. AMU also had 24 turnovers compared to 14 by EWC. Edward Waters converted those turnover into 20 points, 14 more than AMU.
A pair of early threes by Harris kept the Gyrenes close in the opening minutes of the game and after back-to-back buckets by Krimsky, AMU took a 14-11 advantage near the midway point of the first half. After Edward Waters took a 23-22 lead, Brandon Barnes nailed a three to put AMU back in front 25-23. With Ave leading by one, the Tigers finished the half on a 6-0 run to take a 35-30 advantage into the break.
AMU went cold in the second half, missing its first seven shots of the half to fall behind the Tigers 47-32. The Gyrenes weren't able to cut into the Edward Waters lead, eventually falling 70-51.
Ave begins a seven game road trip on Nov. 10 when they travel to Hialeah, Fla., to take on Florida National.
