AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team swept Edward Waters on Saturday to improve to 4-4 on the young season. The Lady Gyrenes took game one 6-3 and won game two of the twin bill with a 4-1 decision.

The Lady Gyrenes return to the field on Monday when they welcome Palm Beach State College to AMU Softball Field for a pair of games.

In game one, Cheyenne Benson pitched five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out five. Jessenia Gonzalez finished the game off for the Lady Gyrenes, allowing three runs on five hits.

AMU got on the board early and often in the 6-3 game one win. To start the game, Benson doubled to deep center to plate Kingsley Avery. Benson was able to score on her hit after an error by the Edward Waters centerfielder.

In the third inning, Alyssa Colding reached on a Tigers errors which scored Avery. McKayla Jeter followed that up with a two RBI double to left center, scoring Brandi Griswold and Colding on the play. The Lady Gyrenes added on another run in the fifth on a Colding sacrifice fly to score Griswold.

Edward Waters scored three runs in the top of the seventh but the Blue and Green were able to close the Tigers down and take game one, 6-3.

Emily Lemin picked up the win in game two, pitching seven innings of one-run ball. She allowed six hits and struck out two. The one run allowed was unearned.

The Lady Gyrenes found themselves in an early 1-0 hole when Edward Waters scored a run in the top of the first. The Blue and Green came back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. The AMU run came via a Benson sac fly to score Avery.

Ave Maria took the lead in the fourth inning when Sarah Vinci hit a RBI groundout to score Colding.

The Lady Gyrenes got a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first coming on a Griswold single up the middle to score Avery and the second on a Colding single to center to score pinch runner Nikki Woodard.
