Lady Gyrenes Defeated By Southeastern 50-81

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team was defeated by conference foe Southeastern 50-81. The Gyrenes drop to 15-13 on the season, 6-10 in the Sun Conference.

The Blue and Green will return to the court on Thursday, February 19 where they will play Northwood University at Tom Golisano field house at 5 p.m. This game will be the last home game in the regular season for the Lady Gyrenes. Seniors, Madison McDonald and Ashlee Rioux will be honored at the conclusion of the game.

Lauren Gillingham led the Gyrenes with 13 points and nine rebounds. Taylor Lindsey contributed nine points.

It was a tough start for AMU, as the Fire came out strong to build a solid 9-2 lead just minutes into the game. AMU slowly started to chip away, and with13 minutes left to go in the half the Lady Gyrenes had cut their deficit in half to trail by three off of a three by Lindsey. The Fire went on a 15-4 run to end the half with AMU now trailing by nine.

McDonald wasted no time in getting the Lady Gyrenes on the board, scoring three points just seconds into the second half to cut the lead to six. Alyssa Ramos responded, just ten seconds later with a three of her own; as Southeastern managed to shoot 7-of-14 in three point attempts for the half. AMU struggled to put the ball in the basket; shooting just 33% from the field in the second half. While AMU only had seven turnovers for the game, they were unable to stop the sharp shooting of Tiara Young, and Ramos from the outside. AMU was outrebounded 44-25 on the afternoon.

Young scored 19 points for the Fire, while Ramos had 15 points, while shooting 50% from the field.
