Gyrenes Travel To Eckerd Wednesday Night

GAME PREVIEW

AVE MARIA, FLA. – This Wednesday evening the Gyrene baseball team will travel up the coast to St. Petersburg to take on NCAA Division II opponent Eckerd College. This will be the first of two meetings Ave Maria will have with the Tritons in 2015 after facing each other twice last season.

THE GYRENES

The blue and green enter Wednesday's nonconference game with a 5-5 overall record after going a combined 2-2 last week against Florida Memorial University and Northwood University.

The offense has continued a steady attack through the first ten games of the season and now sit tied for atop the nation in home runs with thirteen. The Gyrenes, now batting .296 as a team, have been able to maintain a quality overall approach.

Ave Maria was fortunate enough to have two players honored with Sun Conference recognitions this week. Tucker Starkey (Mayville, Ky.) was named Sun Conference Player of the Week and Austin Munn (Lafayette, Ind.) was named Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week. The two will look to lead the Gyrenes into another week of baseball that concludes with a series against Webber International.

SCOUTING ECKERD COLLEGE

The Tritons enter Wednesday's meeting with an overall record of 4-2. Eckerd has seem some opponents that will be familiar to Ave Maria, as they opened the season with a win against Clearwater Christian College and suffered a loss to Webber International in their second outing.

For Eckerd, pitching has been impressive early boasting a team ERA of just 2.12 and a batting average against of .249.

Offensively, the Tritons have a .279 team batting average through their first six games. They have shown a threating presence on the base paths, stealing twenty-four bases in thirty-one attempts so far.
