AVE MARIA, Fla. – Ave Maria University women's lacrosse will play the program's first game on the road against fellow first-year team Florida Tech on Saturday, February 21 at 10 a.m. at Palm Bay High School's Pirate Stadium.

The Panthers played their first game Monday, losing to Roberts Wesleyan College 19-11.
Florida Tech was led by Sara Grenier who tallied five goals.

"We are so excited to play our first game against another first year program in Florida. This has been a long time coming and we have worked really hard for this. Florida Tech is a very talented, well coached team and although they have a lot of freshman - their lacrosse knowledge and experience is extensive. Our goals are to limit turnovers, have patience on offense and most importantly - enjoy this first game. We have been talking a lot about traditions and what this first team wants their legacy to be. It's great to finally see everything be put into action," said head coach Kelly Buikus.

The Gyrenes will be led by captains, Lydia Buckley on attack and Abby Castro on defense. Kelsey Hughes, Marina Gonzales, and Valeria Tkacik ,will play significant minutes in the midfield. Hannah Camerota will get the start at the goalie position.

"I'm excited to see how we've all improved and to see our hard work show. We have really come together this season. Our first game is a stepping stone to all the goals we have and will achieve," states Castro. Buckley added, "We've been preparing for this day and I can't wait to show everyone the time and hard work we've put into this team. Saturday's game will set the tone for the season and the program as a whole".
