Gyrenes Arms Lift Team To Two WinsMiami, Fla—On Saturday afternoon the Ave Maria University baseball team picked up two big conference wins against Florida Memorial University. The double header sweep improves the Gyrene's Sun Conference record to 3-8 and 15-18 overall.
GAME 1 RECAPIn game one, Ave Maria pitchers Austin Comesanas (Miami, Fla.) and Just Bureau (Orange, Calif.) were the stars of the game.
Comesanas got the start for the blue and green gave his team a stellar performance. The right hander went 7.2 shutout innings on his way to his third win of the season. His final pitching line on the afternoon included four hits, five strikeouts and no earned runs.
Bureau also gave a quality performance in game one. The freshman earned the save going 1.1 innings of relief, allowing no hits and striking out one.
The offense was provided by Kellen Creech (Jacksonville, Fla.), Nick Sacchetta (Naples, Fla.), and Ryan Keegan (Estero, Fla.) who each had one of the three AMU RBIs.
GAME 2 RECAPGame two would prove to be yet another pitcher's duel between the Gyrenes and the Lions, who both had their starters take shutouts into the late innings.
Zack Quayle (Knoxville, Tenn.) went 6.1 innings for AMU, scattering six hits and allowing only one earned run. His counterpart, Yoanque Martinez (Hialeah, Fla.), also gave his team a quality start, tossing seven shutout innings. Â
All of the scoring came in the late innings as the Gyrenes would plate two runners in the top of the seventh inning, only to be answered by the Lions with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the tenth inning, with two outs and the game knotted at two, Kellen Creech came up big for Ave Maria, sending a go ahead RBI single to left center.
Justin Bureau, who came on in relief of Quayle, was able to hold the score at 3-2 in his third appearance of the weekend. Bureau earned the win in game two after picking up a save in game one.
