Gyrenes Fall To Rollins

Box Score Winter Park, Fla.—The Ave Maria baseball team began their long weekend trip with a 6-4 loss to Rollins College on Thursday night. AMU now falls to 17-21 on the season. Following the game, the Gyrenes got back on the road as they continue up to Beaufort, South Carolina for their conference weekend series.

Ave Maria was able to spread the offense around Thursday night as four different players contributed an RBI a piece to combine for the four Gyrene runs. Jake Berry (Monteverde, Fla.), Kellen Creech (Jacksonville, Fla.), Andy Hernandez (Miami, Fla.) and Bobby Oliver (Naples, Fla.) accounted for the RBIs.

AMU struck first with a run in the third inning, only to have the lead taken back by Rollins in the bottom of the inning. After the Tars grabbed the lead in the second, they never looked back. Ave Maria attempted a rally in the late stages of the game and were able to bring the score to 6-4 with the tying runs on base but were not able to plate them and complete the comeback.

The top offensive performers for the Rollins Tars were Matt Hendricks (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Mike Dolan (Arlington Heights, Ill). Hendricks had two RBI on a triple to the left center gap and Dolan had two RBI of his own, one of which came off a long solo home run in the third.
