Ave Maria, Fla. – Saturday afternoon the Ave Maria baseball team dropped both ends of a Sun Conference double header with St. Thomas University by the score of 7-5 and 17-11. This afternoon was also a time in which Ave Maria honored their ten graduating seniors with a Senior Day ceremony. After taking the two losses the Gyrenes fall to 19-29 on the season and 6-16 in conference.
GAME 1 RECAPGame one was a continuation of Friday afternoon's matchup that was postponed due to heavy rains. The game was resumed in the top of the second inning with two outs and the Bobcats leading the Gyrenes 4-1.
St. Thomas pushed their lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Andrew Dennis.
The Gyrenes began to fight their way back into the game in the fifth inning as Tommy Lentine drove in Christian Sanchez with an RBI single. Lentine knocked in another run in the seventh as part of a three run rally to tie the game at 5-5.
In the ninth inning Jerry Downs delivered a two run double to put St. Thomas back in front 7-5. The Gyrenes would attempt to spark another rally in the bottom of the inning but it would fall short as the score would remain 7-5 for a final.
Ray Messner took the loss for AMU after giving five strong innings of relief and Brandon Valentin picked up the win for St. Thomas.
GAME 2 RECAPGame two was a high scoring shootout between the Gyrenes and the Bobcats with 28 runs scored over nine innings of play.
Ave Maria jumped out to a big 8-0 lead through the first six innings. The offense was clicking through most of the game as Tucker Starkey had four RBIs on the day, Tommy Lentine had three, Aaron Pigna had two and Rico Soto and Bobby Oliver had one RBI a piece.
Through the final three frames the Gyrenes watched their lead disappear as the St. Thomas offense managed to produce 17 runs in the final third of the game. Home runs by Jerry Downs, Paul Chacin and Michael Centeno were the exclamation points in the Bobcats hitting barrage.
Andrew Giddens was tagged with the loss for AMU and Kharlin Sued got the win for St. Thomas
