Lake Wales, Fla. – Friday afternoon the Ave Maria Gyrenes baseball team was able to get back on the winning track with a 10-3 victory over Warner University. The much needed win was the Gyrene's first since April 8
th against Florida Memorial. The win puts AMU at 20-31 on the season and now 7-17 in The Sun Conference.
GAME RECAPAve Maria got themselves on the board early with two runs in the top of the first. Kellen Creech and Ryan Keegan each had an RBI.
Creech and Keegan struck again in the top of the third, each knocking in another run a piece. Andy Hernandez would also knock in a run to make the score 5-0 Gyrenes heading into the fourth.
Warner was able to get themselves on the board in the fourth with a big three run inning to get themselves back into the game. Dylan Gorss sent a two RBI double into the left center gap and was followed by Kevin Gregg with an RBI single, making the score 5-3 AMU.
In the top of the seventh the Gyrene offense put the game out of reach with a big four run inning. Andy Hernanadez had another RBI single and Tucker Starkey delivered with a big two RBI triple and would later come around to score on a passed ball to put Ave Maria ahead 9-3.
In the ninth, Bobby Oliver accounted for the final Gyrene run, legging out a double down the left field line and coming around to score on a series of overthrows by the Warner defense.
Austin Comesanas earned his fourth win of the season for the blue and green and was helped by 5.1 combined scoreless innings of relief from Ray Messner and Joe Bernhard.
