CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team went 2-0 on day one of the 2015 Sun Conference Tournament, defeating 20th-ranked Thomas, 4-3, and 18th-ranked South Carolina Beaufort, 4-1. The Lady Gyrenes will now play top-seeded and 15th-ranked Southeastern in the finals of the winners bracket of the double-elimination tournament on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Game 1 vs. (20) ThomasÂ
- The Night Hawks jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning only to see the Lady Gyrenes come back with three of their own in the top of the third. The three Gyrene runs came on a three-run home run by Cheyenne Benson.
- Deanna Stirtzinger put the Blue and Green in front in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI single to bring in Alyssa Colding.
- Colding (2-for-3) and Kingsley Avery (2-for-4) each had multiple hits in the game.
- Benson picked up her 11th win of the season, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over seven innings. She help the 18th-ranked Night Hawks scoreless for the final five innings. Â

Game 2 vs. (17) South Carolina BeaufortÂ
- Emily Lemin got the nod in game two and allowed one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings. She struck out eight en route to her ninth win of the season.
- Kingsley Avery got the scoring started for the Lady Gyrenes with a little league inside the park home run. After a leadoff double by Sarah Vinci, Avery singled to right field and with the help of an error by the right fielder, Avery was able to advance all the way home to give AMU a 2-0 lead.
- The Blue and Green added two more runs in the fifth inning. The first on a bases loaded walk by Colding and the second on a RBI single with the bases loaded by McKayla Jeter.
- USCB got a run back in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Maddie Byrd but Lemin was able to shut the Sand Sharks down for the final six outs to secure the AMU upset win.

Up NextÂ
- The Lady Gyrenes will now turn their attention to top-seeded Southeastern. The two will face-off on Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the championship game of the double-elimination tournament. After a first round bye, Southeastern defeated Embry-Riddle 5-3 in their first game of the tournament.
