Volleyball Sweeps Concordia (Ala.) 3-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team completed their fourth straight sweep Saturday afternoon, defeating Concordia College (Ala.) 3-0. The Lady Gyrenes improve to 4-1 on the season with the win and will look to make it a weekend sweep at the Edward Waters Invitational when they take on Tougaloo College (Miss.) at 4 p.m.
 
Game Recap
 
  • The Blue and Green grabbed an early 10-6 lead on a kill by Hannah Wurster and maintained a slight advantage for most of the opening set. Leading 22-18, the Lady Gyrenes won the final three points of the set to take a 1-0 lead, 25-18.
  • Leading 8-7, a pair of three run bursts by the Blue and Green quickly pushed the Lady Gyrenes' advantage to five, 14-9. With Rachel Schultz serving and AMU up 18-14, the Blue and Green went on a 6-0 run to reach game point. After Concordia got a point, the Lady Gyrenes took the second set 25-15 thanks to a serving error by Concordia.
  • It was a back-and-forth third set until four straight points by the Lady Gyrenes gave AMU a 16-13 lead. Concordia came back to tie the game on a couple occasions, including at 19-19, but the Blue and Green won six of the final seven points to take the set 25-20 to secure the straight set victory.
 
Stat Leaders
 
  • Lexy Smith recorded a game-high 12 kills.
  • Hannah Wurster tallied a season-best six total blocks (1S, 5A) to go along with six kills.
  • Veronika Garcia and Mercedyz Mitchell led AMU with 15 assists each.
  • Monique Rivers had 10 digs while Rachel Schultz totaled eight digs to go with a team-best two service aces.

  • The Lady Gyrenes take on Tougaloo College (Miss.) in their final game of the 2015 Edward Waters Invitational. AMU looks to make it a 4-0 weekend after winning their first three games by a combined score of 9-0.
