Gyrenes Win OT Thriller

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- After Nate Krimsky made a crucial free throw with three seconds to play to send the game to overtime, the Ave Maria men's basketball team outscored the visiting Falcons of Florida College 13-10 in the extra frame to come away with an 85-82 victory on Thursday night.

Martez Harris led four Gyrene scorers who finished in double-figures with 23 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Dean tallied 22 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals on the night. Nate Krimsky recorded his second double-double of the season, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also had five assists.

Exor Torres added 10 points for AMU while Julian Adams finished with seven points and seven rebounds.

Ave Maria came out a little sluggish and fell behind Florida College 15-8 early in the opening half. The Falcons lead grew to as much as 13 in the final minute of the half before a jumper by Exor Torres made it 40-29 heading into the break. AMU shot 42 percent in the first half but we just 2-of-13 from three.

Still trailing by 10 with seven minutes to play in regulation, Brandon Dean nailed a three to cut the deficit to single digits. AMU continued to chip away and with 11 seconds to play, Krimsky found Martez Harris in the corner for three to bring the Blue and Green within one, 72-71, with 11 seconds to play.

After Florida College missed the front end of a one-and-one, Krimsky was fouled and made one-of-two to tie the game at 72-72 with three seconds to play. Krimsky nearly won the game in regulation for AMU on the ensuing in-bound, stealing the ball and tossing up a three that just missed the mark as time expired.

In overtime and with AMU in front 77-75 after a Martez Harris jumper, Jahkeal Samuel made a three for Florida College to put the Falcons up 78-77 with 1:35 to play. Harris responded with back-to-back baskets to put the Gyrenes ahead 81-78 with 35 seconds remaining. Dean and Torres each made a pair of free throws in the final 13 seconds to secure the three-point victory for Ave.

Ave Maria returns to action on Saturday when they welcome Florida Memorial to Tom Golisano Field House for a conference contest. The game is set to tip at 4 p.m.
