JWU Hands Lady Gyrenes Three-Point Loss

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team fell to Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon, 70-67. The Blue and Green led for the first 39 minutes before the Wildcats took the lead with 1:04 to play.
 
Taylor Lindsey led Ave Maria in scoring with 21 points. Annie Artise recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Gillingham finished with 13 points to go along with eight rebounds and six rebounds. The trio each played the entire 40 minutes of the game.
 
The Blue and Green came out firing to jump out to a 13-0 lead over the first six minutes of the opening quarter. AMU continued to lead by double-digits for most of the opening half and took a nine points lead, 40-31, into the break.
 
The teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter but the Lady Gyrenes were able to maintain a comfortable advantage, 58-50, heading to the fourth quarter. With Ave Maria leading 65-56 with 4:44 to play, Johnson & Wales ended the game on a 14-2 run to steal a win away from the Lady Gyrenes.
 
Ave Maria committed 22 turnovers compared to 18 by Johnson & Wales but the Wildcats were able to turn those turnovers into 27 points compared to 10 points by AMU. JWU held a 13-5 advantage in points off turnovers in the fourth quarter.
 
The Lady Gyrenes hit the road on Tuesday when they travel to Lakeland to take on Southeastern at 6 p.m.
