JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Ave Maria men's basketball team went 1-1 at the Trinity Baptist College Tournament this weekend in a pair of close games. The Gyrenes defeated host Trinity Baptist 82-80 on Friday before falling at the buzzer to Reinhardt 88-86 on Saturday.
Ave Maria led Trinity Baptist 34-33 at the half and outscored the Eagles 48-47 in the second to edge the host team 82-80. Deonte Dixon led the Gyrenes with 23 points of 5-of-8 shooting from three. He was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Tejai Allen finished with 19 points and five rebounds followed by Romello Bates and Malik Mayeux each with 10 points.
As a team, AMU shot 46.4 percent from the floor and was 6-of-14 from three. The Gyrenes outrebounded Trinity Baptist 33-29.
In their second game of the weekend, the Blue and Green fell to Reinhardt 88-86. Tied at 86, Reinhardt hit a jumper at the buzzer to take down the Gyrenes. Dixon led six Gyrenes in double-figures with 22 points. Allen added 14 followed by Derrick Nicholas with 13 and Bates with 12. Mayeux added 11 points and Exor Torres finished with 10. Torres added a team-high eight assists and seven rebounds.
AMU shot 48.5 percent from the floor compared to 42.7 percent from Reinhardt but made six threes compared to 10 by Reinhardt. The Blue and Green held a 50-24 advantage in points in the paint.
Ave Maria returns to the court on Friday when they travel to Daytona Beach to take on Embry-Riddle at 7 p.m.
