Baseball Upended in High Scoring Affair With Keiser

The Ave Maria University baseball team surrendered eleven consecutive runs, falling 11-8 to the Keiser University Seahawks after taking an early 4-0 lead Wednesday afternoon at Silvester Field in West Palm Beach.

The Gyrenes began the scoring on the third batter of the game. Rico Soto launced a two-run homer over the left center field wall, scoring RJ Warnock, who had started the game with a single to left.

The scoring for AMU continued in the third inning on another longball.
With two outs, Ryan Keegan singled through the left side, which led to Andy Hernandez blasting a home run to center field. The second homer of the day gave Ave Maria a 4-0 lead.

Keiser erased Ave Maria's lead in the bottom of the fourth with four runs of their own. On six hits, including five singles and a game-tying double by Dylan Dore, the Seahawks tied the game at 4.

A two-out rally gave Keiser a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on first and third, Dore drove in his second run of the game on a single. Keivan Berges extended the Seahawk lead to
6-4 on a single which allowed Gabby Mundo to score.

Back-to-back home runs extended Keiser's lead to 9-4 the following inning. Jack Curtis hit a two-run shot with two outs in the inning, and he was followed by Miguel Casanueva, who hit a home run to left field.

AMU loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with no outs, but were left stranded on two strikeouts and a fielder's choice when Doug Wright entered the game from the bullpen. Keiser finished their half of the scoring in the bottom of the eighth, scoring twice on singles by Tyler Goff and Carlos Lopez.

The Gyrenes tried to rally in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs and bringing the tying run to the plate. After singles by Matt Wiles and Christian Sanchez, Rico Soto drove in his third run of the game with a single to left.

A Keegan single then loaded the bases. After a flyout, Max Nell singled to center field for two runs. An RBI single from Chris Lentine brought the tying run to the plate, but the Gyrenes would get no closer.

Freshman pitcher Jake Davey was charged with the loss for Ave Maria, while three scoreless innings from Cort Miller awarded him the victory. For recording the final out, Weston Wuthrich picked up the save.

Ave Maria plays their home opener on Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm at Bowie's Ballpark against South Carolina Beaufort, the first of a three-game series.
