Baseball Done In By Big Inning Against St. Thomas

The Ave Maria University baseball team dropped a midweek contest Wednesday afternoon at Bowie's Ballpark, losing 9-3 to St. Thomas University. The loss was the fifth in a row for the Gyrenes.

After two scoreless innings, St. Thomas sent eleven hitters to the plate in the top of third, scoring seven to jump on the Gyrenes. Three RBI singles accounted for four of the runs, with Adam Duarte, Oscar Aguirre (2 RBI) and Cesar Ramirez all driving in runs. An error, a hit by pitch to German Morales, and a fielder's choice off the bat of Kendrick Gutierrez supplied the other three Bobcat runs.

Another run came across in the fourth inning, as Jose Gomez recorded an RBI single to plate Duarte, giving St. Thomas an 8-0 lead through four innings.

St. Thomas added a run to the lead in the sixth inning. After a double with one out, Gomez scored on a fielder's choice from Ramirez.

The Gyrenes got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with two runs. Rico Soto led off the inning with a double, and pinch runner Tom Cotter scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Keegan.
Andy Hernandez then followed with a double, and he scored on an RBI single from Steven Valentine.

The loss for the Gyrenes was charged to Bruno DeZayas, while Eric Torrente picked up the victory for St. Thomas. STU's Emilio Valdez worked the first four innings for the Bobcats, allowing no runs on three hits.

AMU ended the scoring in the bottom of the ninth with a run, attempting to rally with their final three outs. Consecutive singles by Keegan, Hernandez, and Valentine brought in Keegan.
