JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's volleyball team finished the Edward Waters College Invitational with a three-set victory over the host Tigers. AMU finished the weekend with a 3-1 record.

In a back-and-forth first set, Ave Maria trailed 20-16 late in the set before running off five straight points to take a 21-20 lead. AMU had the first chance to win the set but two straight points by Edward Waters put the Tigers up 25-24. After a Smith kill and a bad set by Edward Waters, she tallied another kill to finish off the set for the Lady Gyrenes, 27-25.

The Blue and Green opened up a close second set by taking nine of 10 points in the middle of the set to turn a two points advantage into a 22-12 lead. The Lady Gyrenes won the final three points of the set to win it 25-14.

Edward Waters didn't let up in the third set and held a 14-12 lead mid-way through the set. But another Lady Gyrene run, this time eight straight points, put the Blue and Green in front 20-14. Bre Holder tallied three of Ave Maria's final five points including a kill to close out the match 25-19.

Smith finished the weekend with 44 kills and seven blocks over the four matches and was selected by the coaches to the All-Tournament Team.

Ave Maria returns to action next weekend when they travel to Brunswick, Ga., to play in the Mariner Invitational hosted by Coastal Georgia.
