West Florida Tops AMU In Football Opener

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria football team fell to West Florida, 45-0, on Saturday in a game that included a 2.5 hour lightning delay. The game was the first under head coach Joe Patterson.
 
The 2.5 hour delay occurred just as play was about to start in the second half.
 
West Florida broke a scoreless game with a one-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter. A 15-yard TD pass later in the quarter made it 14-0 at halftime.
 
Two touchdown runs and a 25-yard field goal in the third quarter put the Argonauts up 31-0. In the fourth quarter, West Florida added two more TDs to make it 45-0.
 
The Gyrenes totaled 105 yards of total offense compared to 500 total yards by West Florida.
 
Bob Orban got the start at quarterback for AMU and finished 13-of-27 for 103 yards and one interception. He was sacked seven times.
 
Kaleb Coffee finished with 13 rush attempts for 31 yards. Xavier Roberts was Orban's top target with eight receptions for 61 yards.
 
On the defensive side of the ball, Ayshad Thornton had seven solo tackles to go along with four assist tackles for 11 total. Andrew Wilson and Shamori St. Kitts each had nine total tackles. Wilson also recovered a fumble and Francois Evariste had AMU's lone interception.
 
Ave Maria returns to action next weekend when they travel to Chicago to take on St. Xavier (Ill.) at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
