Ave Maria, Fla. - Ave Maria Volleyball welcomed Keiser University to the Tom Galisano Field House for a Sun Conference matchup. The Lady Gyenes pulled off a huge upset as they took down the Seahawks three games to two in a fantastic match.
Ave Maria came out firing in the first set, taking an early 13-4 lead. Savannah Stanton and Erica Chenard spurred the fast start. Like all good teams the Seahawks made their run. They won six of the next eight points to creep back into the set. But Ave took a stand and pulled out the first set 25-22. The second set saw much of the same as the Lady Gyrenes built a lead and withstood the Seahawk run to take a two sets to zero lead.
But Keiser showed why they are a perennial contender in the Sun Conference by storming to a third set victory, 25-17 and building a big lead in the fourth set 19-12. Ave Maria showed amazing grit and determination as they fought back winning 10 of the next 13 points to tie it at 22. While the Seahawks would pull out the fourth set, the Lady Gyrenes built incredible momentum that carried on to the fifth set. AMU jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back as they took match and the big upset.
Freshman Savannah Stanton led all players with 14 kills. Fellow Freshman Eric Chenard had 12 kills and senior Bre Holder had some timely hitting late in the match and finished with 9 kills. Ave Maria out-hit Keiser in the match with 61 kills compared to just 54. Lauren Ruby had 30 assists and Cassie Davis had 22 assists and 2 aces. Daniella Jamarillo led the team defensively with 30 digs. Sydney Clark pitched in 15 digs we well.
Next up for the Lady Gyrenes is a busy home schedule. It starts on Monday as they host Johnson and Wales University. Then on Wednesday and Friday the top two teams in the conference make trips to Ave Maria, Florida in Webber University and St. Thomas University. All matches are at 7pm in the Tom Golisano Field House.
