JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Ave Maria men's basketball team opened their 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon at Edward Waters in Jacksonville. The Gyrenes fell to the Tigers 86-75.
 
The Gyrenes led 40-34 at the half but were outscored by Edward Waters 52-35 in the second half in the loss. The two teams were tied 12 times and the lead changed 11 times throughout the game.
 
Josh Flowers led the Gyrenes with 19 points. He was 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Greenan Sullivan finished with 19 points while Stevan Krusevac also finished in double-figures with 14 points. Jovan Grujicic recorded a team-best 13 rebounds to go along with nine points.
 
After shooting 41.4 percent in the opening half, the Gyrenes were held to 29 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes to finish the game at 35 percent overall. AMU was 11-of-32 from three and 22-of-32 from the free throw line.
 
Edward Waters shot 46.2 percent from the field and was 3-of-9 from behind the arc.
 
Ave Maria returns to action next weekend when they take on Reinhardt and Truett-McConnell on the road.
