AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer battled to a draw with the Webber International University Warriors on Wednesday afternoon at AMU Soccer Field. Ave Maria scored twice in the first half, and held on for a draw after two Webber goals in the second half. The draw was AMU's second conference tie of the season, a mark that exceeds all previous seasons combined.
With the aid of a heavy wind, Ave Maria took a 2-0 lead in the opening 45 minutes. The first goal came in the third minute, when Kensley Jean Baptiste chipped a pass from Matias Carbone over the head of the Warner goalie for his fourth goal of the season.
Jean Baptiste struck again in the final minute of the first half, when Josh Roberge floated a perfect cross into the box. The freshman buried his second goal of the game on a header, giving AMU a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Webber International rallied in the second half, scoring first in the 60th minute on a goal from Charlie Lambert, assisted by Noel Omondi. Â
The 2-1 Ave lead lasted to the final minute of regulation, when Juan Pablo Zambrano scored with 21 second remaining on a goal that was deflected around before finding the net.
Neither team was able to score in the 20 minute overtime period, resulting in a draw. Both goalkeepers - AMU's Andrea Salomone and Webber's Randy Chesson - had seven saves on the afternoon. Five players had two shots on goal during the match.
The game was hotly contested between the two teams, resulting in 23 total fouls and three red cards.
Each of Ave Maria's next five matches are away from home, beginning Saturday in Lake Wales against the Warner University Royals. The next home match is October 25 against Keiser University.
