BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Ave Maria University volleyball team concluded the 2017 season on Friday afternoon, losing in straight sets to the Mariners of the College of Coastal Georgia, 25-11, 25-14, 25-23. The Gyrenes had won the first meeting between the two teams, a neutral site match played at Keiser University.
Coastal Georgia broke open the first set with a 10-1 run, turning a 7-7 tie into an 18-7 lead. In total, the Mariners scored 18 of the final 22 points to claim the 25-11 victory in the opening set.
The second set again saw a closely contested set broken open by the host Mariners. Coastal Georgia never led by more than four points in the first set, and led just 13-10 after a kill from AMU's Natalie Rosinski. From there, the Mariners went on a 7-1 run to force an Ave timeout, and put the set away on an Azure Warner kill.
It was the Gyrenes who jumped out to the lead in the third set, scoring seven of the first ten points to take a 7-3 lead. Coastal Georgia did not lead in the set until taking an 11-10 lead, and the remainder of the set was played within two points. Ave Maria won three points in a row late in the set to take a 22-21, led by a pair of kills from Talia Samuels. However, the Mariners ended the match on a 4-1 run, which included two aces, to claim the three-set victory.
In her final match as a Gyrene, Bre Holder was one of two Ave Maria players with a team-high six kills. Natalie Rosinski also added six kills, while Erica Chenard was right behind the pair with five kills. Chenard finished her freshman season as AMU's leader in kills with 165. Cassie Davis was AMU's leader at setter with 12 assists, and Daniela Jaramilo posted 14 digs to complete her junior season with 262.
For Coastal Georgia, who enters their first Sun Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed, Kyra White led the way with ten kills. Ashley Kot added 28 assists and 17 digs in the victory.
Ave Maria's season concludes with four conference wins, which saw the Gyrenes in conference tournament contention entering the final week of the regular season. The conference win total ties for the most by an Ave Maria team since the 2011 squad won six games in TSC play.Â
