Keiser Holds Off Gyrenes In West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. --- The Ave Maria men's basketball team gave (RV) Keiser all they could handle Thursday night, falling to the Seahawks 100-93. Both teams shot the ball well and made at least 12 threes.

Ave Maria drops to 1-7 overall and to 0-3 in TSC play while Keiser improves to 5-1 overall and to 3-0 against Sun Conference opponents.

Stevan Krusevac and Nemanja Brankov led the way for AMU with 25 points and 22 points, respectively. Brankov also grabbed seven rebounds which tied for a team high while Krusevac tallied five assist and three steals. Greenan Sullivan added 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists for AMU. Jovan Grujicic also finished in double-figures with 13 points and seven boards.

AMU shot 50 percent on the night and made 13-of-23 from three. The Gyrenes were 20-of-27 from the free throw line. Keiser made 49.2 percent of their field goals and 12-of-26 of their shots from deep. The Seahawks held a 40-30 advantage on the boards which they converted to a 21-7 edge in second chance points.

Keiser took advantage of a poor start by the Gyrenes to jump out to a 21-7 lead. Ave Maria kept within striking distance and pulled to within four, 30-26, with just under six minutes to play in the first half. The Seahawks ended the half on a run to extend their lead to 11 at the break.

Ave Maria opened the second half with three straight threes by Sullivan, Jonathan Simmons, and Krusevac to get within two points just over a minute into the period. AMU was able to get within two on a couple other occasions but weren't able to tie or take the lead. Keiser went on to extend their lead to double-figures until a late run by AMU brought the game back to single digits late in the half.

The Gyrenes return to action on Saturday when they host Johnson & Wales. The men's game, which is the first game of Saturday's men's and women's basketball doubleheader, is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
