FGCU Tops Women's Basketball in Exhibition

Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's basketball team were defeated on Sunday afternoon by the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast University, 99-35, at Alico Arena in Fort Myers. The Eagles entered the contest coming off a win over nationally-ranked Kentucky, and were ranked No. 4 in College Insider's Mid-Major Poll. The Gyrenes remain 10-1 on the season, with Sunday's game counted as an exhibition.

FGCU raced out to a 31-6 lead in the first quarter, thanks to a 10-of-19 effort from the field and a 17-5 edge in rebounds. Four of Ave Maria's six points in the first quarter came from the foul line, with Macarena Corral providing AMU's only made field goal.

AMU scored eleven points in the second quarter, shooting 41.7 percent from the field after making just one shot in the first frame.  Sarah Miller and Amanda Kasprzak each scored four points in the second quarter, which ended with FGCU holding a 52-17 halftime lead.

Miller added six more points in the third quarter, giving her ten for the game. Miller has been AMU's leading scorer against FGCU in each of her two seasons on campus. The sophomore provided six of Ave's nine points in the third quarter, with the only other made field goal supplied by Jasmine Bateman on a three-pointer, Ave's only three-pointer of the contest. The Eagles held a 76-26 lead after three quarters.

The Gyrenes scored their final nine points in the fourth quarter, including five from Jasmine Bateman, who posted nine points to serve as AMU's second leading scorer. 

FGCU knocked down 16 three-pointers in the win, led by four from leading scorer Jessica Cattani, who poured in 21 for the Eagles. Five FGCU players were in double figures, including Tytionia Adderly, who has 13 rebounds to go with her 13 points. The Eagles outrebounded the Gyrenes 51-27, and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds.

Ave Maria is off for nearly three weeks, returning to action on December 29 in the Keiser New Year's Classic. The Gyrenes face No. 22 Cardinal Stritch University and Bethel College in West Palm Beach on December 29 and 30 at Keiser University.
