St. Thomas Pulls Away From Lady Gyrenes Late

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team was eliminated from the Sun Conference tournament tonight by St. Thomas. The Bobcats defeated the Lady Gyrenes 86-72.  
 
Lauren Gillingham and Mallory Burton each netted 18 points for the Lady Gyrenes while Sarah Miller finished with 12 points. Gillingham also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Burton dished out five assists.
 
As a team, the Lady Gyrenes shot 44.4 percent from the field and were 3-of-13 from three. They made 76.5 percent of their free throw attempts.
 
Desanta' Jordan paced the Bobcats with 21 points. Supavadee Kunchuan finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists.
 
St Thomas shot 58 percent from the floor and made seven threes on the night. The Bobcats also got to the free throw line and converted 21-of-29 from the charity stripe. All of St. Thomas' points came from their starters with all five starters scoring in double-figures.
 
Despite the lead changing only a handful of times, the game featured several big momentum shifts that sparked big runs by both teams.
 
After St. Thomas jumped out to a 8-2 lead, AMU went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-8 lead late in the opening quarter. With AMU leading 19-15, the Bobcats scored 15 of the next 19 points to take an 11-point edge, 34-23.
 
AMU was outscored 25-16 in the second quarter to allow the Bobcats to take a 40-29 lead into halftime.
 
The Lady Gyrenes used a 12-2 run early in the third quarter to erase a 10-point deficit to tie the game at 46-46. The Bobcats responded with a 13-1 run to take a 59-47 lead. After trailing by as many as 18 in the fourth, AMU cut the deficit to nine before St. Thomas was able to put the game away.
 
The Lady Gyrenes end their season with an 11-14 overall record and a 7-9 record in conference play.
