AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Lady Gyrene women's lacrosse team welcomed the Concordia Unviersity St. Paul Bears, a member of the NCAA division II, to Gyrene Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Ave Maria came out firing and built an early lead 4-1 but the Bears had an answer as they scored four straight to take their first lead. The Bears weren't done there as they dominated play to end the first half building a two-goal advantage going into the break, 11-9.
Â
But the Lady Gyrenes made some great changes in the second half and controlled play for most of the half. Abby Castro lead the offensive charge netting five goals in the game as Katlyn Sherman chipped in 3 goals. AMU had a very balanced attack having eight different goal scorers.
Â
The Bears hung tough and seemed to have an answer for every run the Lady Gyrenes made. The score went back and forth until Concordia broke a tied, 15-15, score with just under two minutes left in the game left.
Â
With the Bears leading, 16-15, The Lady Gyrenes had a final chance to tie the game with 10 seconds left after causing a turnover at midfield but failed to get a final shot off as they fell on this Sunday afternoon.
Â
The next game for the team is a home matchup with Georgetown (Ky.) at Gyrene Field at 4pm on Tuesday. Â
