Lady Gyrenes Top St. Thomas In Pitcher’s Duel

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. --- It took eight innings for a team to score a run but in the end, it was the Lady Gyrenes that came out on top, 4-1, at St. Thomas on Friday evening. Ave Maria improves to 19-9 on the season with the win.
 
Sadie Mosher and St. Thomas' Castiglione both dominated in the circle for seven innings as neither team was able to plate a run. Going into the eighth the Lady Gyrenes had managed four hits while Mosher had limited St. Thomas to just three hits.
 
In the eighth, it was Mosher who drove in the first run, reaching on a single to right field that allowed Pookie Del Pino to score. Later in the inning, Brittney Pressler connected on a three-run home run to extend the AMU lead to 4-0.
 
In the bottom half of the inning, St. Thomas got one run across but it wouldn't be enough as the Lady Gyrenes took game one of the three game series, 4-1.
 
Mosher pitched the complete game for AMU, allowing one unearned run on four hits and no walks. She struck out seven on the day. For St. Thomas, Castiglione allowed eight hits and struck out 10 in the loss.
 
Pressley was 2-for-4 on the day with the three-run home run. Deanna Stirtzinger and Mosher also collected two hits in the game.
 
The two teams return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
