ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Ave Maria women's lacrosse team used a 14-goal run to top Missouri Baptist 15-4 on Monday in St. Louis. AMU improves to 6-5 on the season and to 2-1 against Independent Conference teams.
Sarah Wade opened the scoring with a goal 2:25 into the game. After Missouri Baptist scored two quick goals, AMU responded with a 9-0 run to end the half. Six different Lady Gyrenes scored in the first half led by Katelyn Sherman with three goals. Wade and Georgia Miller each had two goals in the opening 30 minutes.
Wade added two more goals in the second while Miller, Mackenzie Tourville, and Alexis Smich each tallied another goal for AMU.
After Missouri Baptist scored with 26:39 to play in the first, the Lady Gyrenes defense was able to hold them scoreless until they broke the 14-goal run by AMU with a goal with 3:44 to play. They would add another goal with 1:48 to play to make it 15-4.
AMU outshot Missouri Baptist 34-17 and had 13 more shots on goal. The Lady Gyrenes committed two less turnovers and grabbed one more ground ball then Missouri Baptist. Ave Maria was 5-for-11 on free position shots with Wade converting all three of her attempts.
Bianca Ballarin picked up the win in net, making eight saves and allowing two goals in 44 minutes of work. Andie Wagner played the final 16 minutes for the Lady Gyrenes.
Ave Maria returns home on April 12 when they host Keiser. Prior to that game, AMU will recognize its graduating senior class.
