Women’s Lacrosse Set For National Invitational Opener Against Davenport

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- The Ave Maria women's lacrosse team will take on Davenport (MIch.) in its first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Invitational tomorrow at Sirrine Stadium in Greenville, S.C. The contest will begin at 11:30 a.m.
 
Ave Maria, who finished the season tied for sixth in the latest poll, received the fourth at-large bid and will take on WHAC Conference Champion and two-seed Davenport in round one.
 
Ave Maria has already played four of the seven other teams that are in the tournament field. AMU and Davenport played earlier this season, AMU's second game of the year, in Ave Maria with the Panthers coming out on top 22-14.
 
The Lady Gyrenes' had four garner all-conference awards for the Independent Conference. AMU had two student-athletes on the first two and two earn second team accolades.
 
Katelyn Sherman (attack) and Alexis Smich (defense) each earned first team all-conference recognition while Mackenzie Tourville (attack) and Sarah Wade (midfield) were each named to the second team.
 
Sherman leads the Lady Gyrenes this season in goals with 39. She also has tallied a team-high in shots (71) and shots on goal (60). Smich has collected 30 ground balls and caused 10 turnovers on the season while also tallying 13 goals and 12 assists.
 
Wade is second on the team in goals with 31 flowed by Tourville with 24. Tourville has a team-best 14 assist. Tourville leads AMU with 54 draw controls while Wade is second with 32 draw controls and 21 ground balls.
 
The NAIA Network – the association's official video streaming home – will broadcast all games at the 2017 NAIA Men's and Women's Lacrosse National Invitational.
