AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's soccer team opened their 2017 season on Thursday afternoon against Florida National. The visiting Conquistadors edged the Lady Gyrenes 3-1. The game was originally scheduled for Monday but was rescheduled due to the solar eclipse.
Florida National struck first, finding the back of the net just over five minutes into the game. At around the 17-minute mark, the game went into a 70-minute lightning delay. Florida National netted two quick goals when play resumed and took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The Lady Gyrenes held possession better in the second half and after a couple good scoring opportunities, Gianna Vega found the back of the net for AMU's first goal of the season. The goal, that came in the 80th minutes, was off a pass by Alexia Mazzoccone. AMU continued to keep the pressure on in the final minutes and had a couple more chances late in the game.
Florida National outshot the Lady Gyrenes 12-9 but put just one more shot on frame than AMU, 6-5.
Goalkeeper Erica Larson made three saves in her Lady Gyrene debut. Meghan Precord tallied the most shots on goal for AMU with two.
Ave Maria returns to action on Saturday when they host Life University. Kick-off is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at AMU Soccer Field.
