MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team kicked off conference play on Wednesday afternoon against Keiser University, who was selected by Sun Conference coaches as the co-favorite in the league. Ave Maria dropped the match 13-0 to the host Seahawks, who peppered the net with 58 shots, including 31 shots on goal.
Keiser scored three goals in the first half, and added ten more in the final 45 minutes. Cooper Mullins was the offensive leader for the Seahawks, scoring three goals and assisting on another. Ebba Gustafsson and Beth Smyth scored twice, and Filippa Millqvist assisted on four of Keiser's 13 goals.
Erica Larson, the Ave Maria goalkeeper, turned away 16 shots for the Gyrenes in Miami Gardens. Larson's 16 saves easily set a career high, and was the most for an Ave Maria goalie since Francesca Singleton saved 20 shots against SCAD-Savannah in 2013. The mark from Larson tied for the fifth highest save total in AMU school history.
The Gyrenes have a week until their next match, which will see Ave Maria return home to face the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University. The series between the Gyrenes and the Wildcats has been hotly contested in recent years, with six of the last eight matches decided by one goal or ending in a tie. Kickoff at the AMU Soccer Field is scheduled for noon.
