Women's Soccer Season Comes to a Close

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team concluded their 2018 season on Saturday afternoon, falling 11-0 to Southeastern University. Southeastern clinched a share of The Sun Conference regular season championship with the victory, finishing 9-0-1 in league play.

Southeastern, who possesses one of the most potent attacks in the nation, scored their opening goal in the third minute. Uchenna Kanu, who leads the country in goals and points, beat the defense on a pass from Yulie Lopez to get the Fire on the board. Kanu would score five goals and add three assists on the day, putting her over 100 points on the season. Gabriella Didio added a goal in the first half to go along with three from Kanu, giving the Fire a 4-0 lead at halftime.

The Fire would add seven more goals in the second half on tallies by Summer Rusher, two from Kanu, Isabel Madson, Isamar Duran, and two from Aisha Solorzano. Southeastern attempted 39 shots during the match, and recorded assists on nine of the eleven recorded goals.

Ave Maria's attack logged four shots on the afternoon, and recorded one shot on goal. Genevieve Riley stopped six shots as the AMU goalkeeper in the final match of her senior season.

The Gyrenes conclude the season with four victories, a marked improvement from the 2017 season. Ave Maria's season included conference victories over Webber International and Florida Memorial, where the team mounted the biggest comeback in program history. Three seniors  - Sarah McBride, Genevieve Riley, and Bernadette Hartney  - will depart the program upon graduation this spring, with the bulk of AMU's roster set to return for the 2019 season.
