LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team held up to a barrage from the Warner University Royals, falling 2-0 despite being outshot 33-3. The Gyrenes were able to hold the Royals scoreless for all but a 83-second stretch in the first half.
Warner scored both of their goals in quick succession, starting in the 33rd minute. Betina Gerhardt received a pass from Brooke Bloomel, and beat the AMU keeper for her fourth goal of the season. Less than 90 seconds later, Gerhardt was credited with the assist when her pass to Danielle Stanley found the back of the net, giving Warner the 2-0 lead.
AMU goalkeeper Molly Jensen stopped the other 12 shots to come her way, keeping the Royals off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match. Samanntha Warren took 12 shots for Warner, while Kristen Isabelle and Gerhardt each attempted three shots on goal. Ten Royals attempted at least one shot, and nine had an opportunity to score with a shot on goal.
Hannah Lawrence attempted Ave Maria's only shot on goal, and Sarah McBride attempted the other two shots, both of which were off target.
The Gyrenes remain on the road for their next match, which will see AMU take on St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens on Wednesday. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.. Following the St. Thomas match, Ave Maria will return home for a match with the Sand Sharks of the University of South Carolina Beaufort.
