Women's Basketball Dominates in Pennsylvania

MCKEESPORT, Pa.- The Ave Maria University women's basketball team dominated in their fifth consecutive win, rolling to a 92-47 victory over Penn State Greater Allegheny on Wednesday night. The Gyrenes built a 31-point halftime lead, and won all four quarters in their third 90-plus point output of the season.

After giving up the first basket of the game three seconds in, the Gyrenes proceeded to lead for the final 38:16 of the contest. Ave scored 28 points in the first quarter, powered by a 14-2 run in the final 3:23 of the first quarter. Sarah Miller continued her stellar play with ten points in the opening ten minutes, while Katie Houbolt and Megan Allen both chipped in five.

The AMU lead continued to grow in the second quarter, as the Gyrenes added 26 points to take a 54-23 lead into the halftime break. Ave Maria shot 57.9 percent from the field in the second frame, which included a 9-0 run in the final minutes of the half to extend their lead to 32 points. AMU was also dominant on the glass, grabbing eleven rebounds to just four for the Lions. 

In the second half, Ave won both the third and the fourth quarters en route to the final margin of 45 points. With the game well in hand, AMU kept the defensive pressure up, allowing just 24 points in the second half after giving up 23 in the first half. In their first five games of the season, the Gyrenes are averaging just 45 points per game against, and opponents are shooting just 30 percent from the field.

Miller made ten of her 15 shots to account for a game-high 21 points, and the junior added seven rebounds and four steals to her total. Danielle Weinmann chipped in 14 points, while Renee Roberts and Megan Allen both scored eleven points off the bench. The Gyrenes shared the ball well in the win, recording 31 assists on 39 made baskets. Macarena Corral led the way with eight assists, with Weinmann adding six. On the glass, Syanne Rowe pulled down eleven rebounds.

Ave Maria's trip to Pennsylvania continues on Thursday night, when the Gyrenes battle Point Park University in Pittsburgh. The game against Point Park is the second of Ave Maria's three games in the Keystone State. Tipoff against the Pioneers, who are 0-4 with two losses to nationally ranked competition, is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
