Gyrene Softball Wins in Plant City

PLANT CITY, Fla.- The Ave Maria University softball team moved to 5-2 on the season with a 5-4 victory over Point University on Saturday afternoon. The Gyrenes outhit Point 8-4 in the victory, which helped AMU overcome five errors.

After a scoreless first inning, the Gyrenes got on the board in the bottom of the second. Emma Thompson led off the inning with a single, and proceeded to steal second. Abagail Love followed with a single, which moved Thompson to third. Ave Maria then executed a play on the basepaths, which saw Love steal second and Thompson come home, giving AMU a 1-0 lead.

Three errors allowed Point to tie the game in the top of the third. All three baserunners for the Skyhawks came via AMU miscues, including the tying run, Runyans, scoring on an error off the bat of Pendley.

A one-out single from Kalie Romig started a two-run third for the Gyrenes. Romig then stole second base and moved to third on an error. Deanna Stirtzinger laid down a sacrifice bunt, which scored Romig to put the Gyrenes back in front. With two outs, Michella Davis doubled to left field, and Thompson followed with an RBI single to increase Ave Maria's lead to 3-1.

Point posted their biggest inning in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 4-3 lead. An error allowed the first run to score, and Rogers drilled a two-run triple with two outs, which gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the game.

Ave Maria responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring what would prove to be the game-winning runs. Love started the inning with a single and a stolen base. Brooke Pierron tied the game with an RBI single, and eventually scored the winning run off the bat of Destinee Elmore.

Brianna Geiger preserved the 5-4 lead for Ave Maria in the final three innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six hitters to earn the save. At the plate, Thompson and Love led the way with two hits each, and Love added the win in the circle. Point starting pitcher Beilstein tossed all six innings for the Skyhawks, striking out three hitters without walking any.

The Gyrenes complete their five game stretch in Plant City with two games on Sunday. The opening game comes at 11 a.m. against William Carey University, with the finale against Cincinnati Christian University following at 1 p.m.
