AVE MARIA, Fla.- For the first time since the 2013-2014 season, the Ave Maria women's basketball program will be hosting a game in The Sun Conference Tournament. The Gyrenes, who finished tied for third in the league and earned the number four seed, will play host to fifth-seeded Johnson and Wales University at the Tom Golisano Field House. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening.
Ave Maria is playing the The Sun Conference Tournament for the seventh time in the ten-year history of the program. The Gyrenes hold a 10-4 record in tournament play, and won the conference championship in 2012 and 2014. Johnson and Wales is in the bracket for the first time since the 2014-15 season. AMU and JWU last met in the 2014 conference tournament, when the Gyrenes claimed a 72-54 victory en route to the team's second title in three seasons.
Tuesday's game marks the third meeting of the season between Ave Maria and Johnson and Wales, as well as the third trip to the Tom Golisano Field House this season for the Wildcats. The Gyrenes won at home on December 2, jumping out to a 13-point first quarter lead en route to a 84-74 win. AMU sealed the regular season sweep with an 80-72 win in North Miami on January 25, a game that saw Sarah Miller and Lauren Gillingham combine for 46 points and 23 rebounds.
The winner of Tuesday night's contest advances to the conference semifinals against undefeated Southeastern, who is the top-ranked team in the nation. The other quarterfinal features No. 3 Coastal Georgia hosting No. 6 Thomas, with the winner slated to face No. 2 St. Thomas. The two semifinals and the championship game will be played Friday and Saturday on the campus of Southeastern University in Lakeland.Â
Fans who attend Tuesday night's contest will be provided all-you-can eat popcorn free with admission to the game. Fans who cannot make it to the Ave Maria campus can watch the game on the AMU Stretch Internet portal. The audio broadcast will be provided free, while the video broadcast will carry a small fee.
