SARASOTA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria men's tennis team won their eight match of the season on Friday afternoon, defeating NCAA DIII Franciscan 8-1. The receiving votes Ave Maria men's tennis team is 8-4 on the season.
Ave Maria swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead against Franciscan. Sebastian Ramirez and David Zuleta won at first-doubles 8-5. Nicholas Hofmeister and Brandon Valley won a two-double 8-2 while Brian Schmidt and Cesar Menacho took the three-doubles match 8-0.
In singles play, Hofmeister finished his match first at four-singles to give AMU a 4-0 lead with his 6-0, 6-0 win. Ramirez finished next with the match clinching fifth point. He won at first-singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Zuleta won his match at two-singles, 7-5, 6-1. David Hanton won at five-singles, 7-5, 6-4, and Menacho won at six-singles, 6-3, 6-3, to wrap up the scoring for AMU. Schmidt dropped a tough three-set match at three singles.
The Gyrene men's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday when they take on Florida Tech at AMU Tennis Faciltiy. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
