Baseball Scores 25 Runs in Comeback Wins

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University baseball team needed nearly all of their 25 runs in Tuesday's doubleheader, as the Gyrenes earned two victories over Florida National University. Ave Maria picked up wins of 14-12 and 11-10 over the Conquistadors, sweeping a four-game series with FNU dating back to February.

In the opening game of the day, the Gyrenes came up with one of the biggest comebacks in school history, rallying from an 8-0 deficit to earn a 14-12 victory. The win contained a stretch of 14 consecutive runs for the Gyrenes, powering the victory.

Florida National jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first three innings with six in the first, one in the second and one in the third. In the first inning, Ezequiel Valdez drove in one run with a single, as did Branden Perdomo. Henry Perez came up with the biggest hit of the inning, a two-run single. Two more runs scored on an error, which also led to the final two outs of the inning. A sacrifice fly from Perez and a Benjamin Murray double in the following two innings built Florida National's 8-0 lead.

Ave Maria began their comeback thanks to a seven-run third inning. The first two runs of the inning were plated on an RBI groundout from Alex Perez and an RBI double from Ryan Keegan. Luis Dominguez then brought the Gyrenes within two runs on a three-run homer. Matt Wiles also added an RBI single, with an error bringing in the seventh run of the inning for AMU.

AMU took the lead in the fourth inning with five more runs, and added two more needed runs in the fifth. Rico Soto drove in the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, and Nick Wydler added an RBI single that saw two more runs score on an error. Chris Wydler completed the fourth with an RBI groundout. The two runs in the fifth inning were driven in by Steven Valentine on a single, and by Dominguez on an error.

The Conquistadors' attempted rally saw four runs score in the sixth inning, but Andrew Giddens came on in the seventh inning to earn his sixth save of the season.

Ave Maria also rallied to win in the second game, scoring four runs in the fifth to claim an 11-10 victory.

The teams traded runs in each of the first two innings, leaving the game tied at two after two. Florida National's runs were both provided by Ave Maria errors, while a sacrifice fly from Rico Soto and a single from Alex Perez did the damage for the Gyrenes.

Five runs in the bottom of the third inning propelled the Gyrenes to a 7-2 lead. The first two runs both came on FNU miscues- a wild pitch and an errant pickoff throw to third. The biggest hit of the inning was blasted by Tully Allen, who launched a long home run for his second longball of the season.

Florida National responded with an eight-run fourth inning to take a 10-7 lead. Valdez's two-run single was the most notable hit of the inning for the Conquistadors, giving the visitors a three-run lead.

Following an RBI single from Matt Wiles, Ryan Keegan gave the Gyrenes the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer, his first of the season.

As he did in the first game, Giddens picked up the save for the Gyrenes. With his seventh save of the year, Giddens moved into second in saves in Ave Maria single season history, two shy of Justin Bureau's school record from two seasons ago.

After Easter Break, the Gyrenes return to action next Wednesday, as AMU welcomes Webber International University to Bowie's Ballpark for one non conference game.
