MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- The Ave Maria University softball team could not crack the pitching of St. Thomas University on Wednesday night, and dropped both ends of a Sun Conference doubleheader. The Bobcats earned victories of 2-0 and 1-0 over the Gyrenes, splitting the season series at two games a piece.
St. Thomas scored twice in the first inning in the opening game of the doubleheader, which proved to be enough in a 2-0 victory.
One hit supplied both runs for the Bobcats, who put two runners on base on a leadoff single from Melody Grafals and an error off the bat of N. Manieri. A. Sands then drove both runners in with a double down the left field line, providing a two-run lead for the Bobcats.
Ave Maria recorded four hits in the losing effort, with Genevieve Twigg recording two hits and Michella Davis and Brooke Pierron each adding one. AMU put a runner in scoring position in the third, fifth, and seventh innings, but could never get a run across.
Brianna Geiger did not allow a run after the first inning, but picked up a tough luck loss. St. Thomas' Emily Santos picked up the win after pitching the final 4.1 innings in the circle.
A fifth inning home run gave St. Thomas the sweep in the nightcap, a 1-0 win for the hosts.
After four innings of scoreless softball, Sands, who drove in all three runs on the night in the two games, belted a home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Gyrenes and St. Thomas each posted five hits in the final game this season between the teams. Pierron led the Gyrenes with two hits, and Emma Thompson, Twigg, and Geiger logging the other three hits.
Abby Love pitched well in her four innings in the circle, allowing just three hits and keeping the Bobcats off the scoreboard.
Ave Maria gets a week off before their next game, a Sun Conference doubleheader against Webber International University. The doubleheader at the AMU Softball Field is scheduled for 2:00 and 4:00 in Ave Maria.
