TITUSVILLE, Fla.- The Ave Maria University softball team wrapped up their Spring Break road trip on Friday morning, falling 4-2 to the Pomeroys of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. The loss snapped a seven-game AMU winning streak, and dropped the Gyrenes to 15-4.
Each team scored a run in the opening inning of the contest. Kalie Romig led off the game with a single for the Gyrenes, and the leadoff hitter proceeded to steal second and third base. After a walk to Deanna Stirtzinger, the Gyrenes executed a double steal play to get Romig across the plate. An RBI double from SMWC's Baylee Waters drove in Hollie Jones for the Pomeroy run in the bottom of the first.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with three runs. Following a leadoff single, Malerie Higginbotham scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. With one out and two runners on base, Jones drove in two runs on a double to right center field, giving the Pomeroys a 4-1 lead.
Ave Maria did not record another hit after Romig's leadoff single until the top of the seventh, when Emma Thompson led off the frame with a single of her own. After Thompson was put out on a double play, Genevieve Twigg extended the game with a home run over the left field fence. The Gyrenes were unable to pull any closer, falling 4-2 in the final game of a six-game trip on the east coast of Florida.
Brianna Geiger took the loss for the Gyrenes, despite not allowing a run to the Pomeroys in her final four innings in the circle.
The Gyrenes return home to the AMU Softball Field on Monday for a doubleheader with Division II Lindenwood University. The Gyrenes enter the doubleheader with a 15-4 record, which still stands as the best 19-game start in school history. First pitch in Ave Maria is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
