Lacrosse Loses First Game in Kansas

Box Score ATCHISON, Kan.- The Ave Maria lacrosse team fell victim to a second half surge from the Ravens of Benedictine College on Thursday evening, losing the first game of their Kansas roadtrip 22-10. The Ravens rattled off eight consecutive goals in the second half to turn an 11-8 lead into an eleven-goal edge.

Benedictine scored the first three goals of the game in the first five minutes on tallies from Emily Ruhland, Chiara Petruccelli and Kacey Moore. The Gyrenes batted back for five of the next eight goals, pulling within one at 6-5. Katelyn Sherman led the Gyrene attack early, scoring two goals in the first ten minutes of the game. The teams traded two goals each to end the first half with Benedictine holding an 8-7 lead.

As they did in the first half, the Ravens opened the second half with three consecutive goals. Mary McEnerney was the key player in the run, scoring two goals and assisting on another. After an AMU goal from Sherman, Benedictine scored eight in a row, led by three from Lizzie Darrow. Stephanie Hilker and Alexa Keeler scored the final two Ave Maria goals, and the Ravens answered with three in a row to conclude the day's scoring.

Sherman was Ave Maria's leading scorer on the day, scoring four times. Aiyanah Simms and Alexa Keeler each scored twice, while Hilker and Anneliese Sawick each added one goal. Alexis Smich had the only Gyrene assist on the day. McEnerney was the leading scorer for the Ravens, putting five balls in the net.

Ave Maria's 2018 season comes to an end on Friday, as the Gyrenes battle Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas. The season finale between the Gyrenes and the Braves, who are receiving votes in the newest NAIA poll, is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. eastern time, 6:00 p.m. local time.
